There are three main characters in Balinese Kecak dance performance, which are Rama, Sita, and Rahwana. Yet, there is another critical character in this dance you must know called Hanuman. Here, we will explain more about Hanuman in the Ramayana Story, Hanoman Dance, and Kecak Dance. You can enjoy the dance more when knowing the characters and stories.

Hanuman in Ramayana Story

You will see a character who looks like a white monkey when enjoying a Hanuman Dance performance. The monkey is Hanuman, yet this character is not a 100 percent monkey. Hindu believe that Hanuman is a god in the form of a half-monkey and half-human.

Hanuman has a role as the follower of Prince Rama. It is because this white monkey has special powers. That’s why he must help Prince Rama to save Sita when she is kidnapped by Rahwana.

Hanuman gets a monkey appearance due to his mother known as Anjana who is also a half-monkey. The Gods send Payasam, a pudding from heaven for Prince Rama’s mother and Anjana. Because of that, Hanuman was born with a special power since he was a boy. Hanuman is considered a God because Vayu, the God of the wind and air, took Hanuman as his son.

The Role of Hanuman in the Ramayana Story

The role of Hanuman in Ramayana Story is to protect and help Prince Rama. It is included when Sita, Prince Rama’s wife is kidnapped by Rahwana. Hanuman uses his power to help Rama to defeat Rahwana.

Because of his power, Hanuman can grow bigger or shrink smaller, is as strong as the King of the Gods, and is immune to fire. Water also can’t harm Hanuman. He even gets a power from Vayu that makes him as fast as the wind. In the story, Hanuman loses his power since he often uses it to prank innocent people. Yet, Hanuman gets the power back since he promises to use the power only to help Prince Rama and other people.

The Costume of Hanuman in Hanuman Dance Performance

The dancer who plays Hanuman wears a different costume than other dancers. He is wearing a white costume to cover his body. Some dancers often paint their bodies with a white color to act as Hanuman. In the story, Hanuman looks attractive and different because of his white fur.

The face of the dancer is also covered by a monkey mask since Hanuman’s face is a monkey. The dancer also wears other accessories, such as a Balinese sarong, a belt, and another accessory that they wear on their neck.
