The Story Behind Bebek Shrida – Welcome to Shrida Taste of Ubud, where the spirits of Balinese culture walk hand in hand with the art of great dining. Set against the vibrant yet peaceful backdrop of Jalan Bisma, Shrida does not represent just a restaurant with the best seafood in Ubud. Instead, it defines a confluence of flavours, creativity and collective spirit.
Ever since the inception of this place on June 29, 2019, it has always had as its goal to create a dining experience that could be described figuratively as a strong embrace of Indonesia’s gloriously rich culinary culture.
Read on to take a peek behind the curtains of our signature Bali dishes, which eventually became the core of our restaurant: Bebek Shrida. This crispy duck delicacy has won the hearts and loyalty of many of our guests, and we are delighted to share its story with you today.
How It All Started
The idea of Shrida Taste of Ubud was born out of our obsession with food and our love for Bali’s singular heritage. As a team, we intended to create a space not only for delicious meals but also to honor the aspects of cultural richness in Ubud. In our minds, Shrida was envisaged as a gathering place for art, culture, and gastronomy-decked halls where locals and travelers come together.
As from day one, we knew that the menu had to portray the best of Indonesian cuisine. It would have been more prudent to feature international dishes in a touristy area like Ubud; nevertheless, we believed in the power of our roots. And that is how gado-gado, soto ayam and our now-famous Bebek Shrida became the stars of our menu.
The Art of Creating Bebek Shrida
Our Executive Chef, Made Suwendra, is the mastermind behind Bebek Shrida. His vision was to create a dish that would stand out not only for its flavor but also for the care that goes into its preparation. Every detail, from the sourcing of the ingredients to the final plating, is handled with precision and dedication.
Here’s what makes Bebek Shrida so special:
We start with locally sourced duck, ensuring that we support our community while using the freshest ingredients. The duck is then slow-cooked for an incredible six hours over a gentle flame. This process allows the meat to become incredibly tender while absorbing the rich flavors of the spices we use. Once the duck is ready, it’s fried to golden, crispy perfection.
The dish is served with creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms, creating a harmony of textures and flavors that delights every palate. The crunch of the crispy duck, the softness of the mashed potatoes, and the earthy richness of the mushrooms come together in a way that feels both luxurious and comforting.
As Chef Suwendra often says: “The slow-cooking process is our secret weapon. It’s what makes the texture softer and the flavor so much more vibrant.”
A Dish That Stole Hearts
Since the day we introduced Bebek Shrida, it’s been a runaway hit. Guests from all corners of the world have fallen in love with this dish, often calling it the highlight of their visit to Ubud.
One guest told us, “I’ve eaten duck dishes in so many countries, but nothing compares to Bebek Shrida. The texture, the flavor—it’s pure magic!”
It’s feedback like this that fuels our passion. We take pride in knowing that we’re not just serving food—we’re creating memories. Every plate of Bebek Shrida that leaves our kitchen is a reflection of our dedication to excellence.
Shrida: A Home for Art, Culture, and Community
While Bebek Shrida might be the centerpiece of our culinary story, Shrida Taste of Ubud is about so much more than food. From the beginning, we’ve envisioned Shrida as a space where people can gather, connect, and immerse themselves in the spirit of Ubud.
Our restaurant regularly hosts events that celebrate Balinese culture, including art exhibitions, live music performances, and culinary workshops. These gatherings bring together artists, musicians, and food lovers, turning Shrida into a vibrant hub of creativity and community.
For us, Shrida isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a living, breathing part of Ubud’s cultural tapestry. We’re proud to play a role in preserving and promoting the traditions that make Bali so special.
