Penglipuran Village Festival, Combination of Tourism and Culture Preservation

The Penglipuran Village Festival

Every year, the local government holds a cultural festival in this village. Last year, they had a festival with the theme of Bamboo Paradise. It was amazing. You can see why people call it one of the best destinations in Bali.

This year, they also held the same cultural festival, which was held from July 4 to 7. That was the 11th cultural festival of this unique village. This more than decade-old festival has become the trademark of this village. It is not wrong that many tourists aim for that. They visited this village during this festival to see a more interesting view.

The Festival Menu

This year’s festival uses a unique theme related to Earth. It is called “Endless Devotion to Mother Earth as a Spirit of Tourism.” In the local language, it is called “Pertiwi.”

During the festival, we can see various traditional performances. It opened with several traditional dances and a cultural parade. One of the traditional dances that were performed here is the Raksaguni Dance. The mascot of Penglipuran Village performed this dance.

Other than traditional dance, the festival also held many interesting performances. There was a Rangda traditional dance competition. We also saw a barista coffee latte art competition. And, the tourists also can experience the Megibung tradition. It is one of the famous food-sharing traditions from Bali.

The Meaning of the Festival

The festival is held to attract many tourists. According to the festival organizer, they targeted 5,000 tourists visiting during this festival. Normally, this village was visited by 2,500 to 3,000 people every day.

However, the festival also has a deeper meaning than just tourism. This festival shows the true value of culture in this village. How villager keeps the traditions and preserve them is one of the best things you can find here. Thus, you can see and feel the true Balinese culture when you step into this village.

You can see how the villager applies the tradition truthfully. One of the interesting things you can find here is how they get around. You are not permitted to ride a car. People walk and ride bicycles to get around.

It also is applied to the house where villagers live. The design is unique. It is different than other traditional Balinese houses. Furthermore, all houses in Penglipuran Village are similar. This uniformity also shows the harmony of life and tradition in its social life.

Speaking about uniformity, each house in Penglipuran Village also has similar room types. There are bedrooms. Then, it has a living room. Lastly, there is always a prayer room.

The unique design of the house is based on the Tri Mandala. It is a traditional architecture concept you can only find in Bali. As you can see, the people in this village incorporate tradition into almost every aspect of their life. It does affect how they live. More than that, it is the best method that they can use to keep and preserve this precious tradition for the future.
