This year we wanted to escape the regular mess in the city and head for Shrida Ubud-a hidden treasure in the heart of Bali. And I can assure you this is one of our best ever decisions.

Stepping into Shrida Ubud, we were met with big smiles and that distinctive aroma of frangipani flowers. The whole local staff in their elegant Balinese attire made us feel at home. The lobby itself was a lovely open space that had intricate wood carvings and traditional Balinese decor that merged seamlessly with modern-day furnishing.  

The room was no different. It was spacious yet warm, had large windows that brought a tour across the panoramic rice terrace views of Ubud, and offered little privilege, our own private balcony to sip our morning coffee while admiring nature’s beauty. A New Year’s Eve with a Balinese Twist  

The real magic began as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape. Shrida Ubud had curated a New Year’s Eve program that was nothing short of spectacular.  

The evening started with a traditional Balinese dance performance. Watching the graceful movements of the dancers, accompanied by the hypnotic sounds of the gamelan, we felt as though we were transported to another time. It was a beautiful reminder of Bali’s rich cultural heritage, something that Shrida Ubud proudly celebrates.  

Next came the feast. And what a feast it was! Shrida Ubud’s chefs had prepared a special New Year’s Eve menu that blended Balinese flavors with international cuisine. Before the clock struck twelve, we participated in a small Balinese ritual called “melukat,” a water blessing ceremony meant to cleanse the soul and bring good fortune for the year ahead. Standing under the gentle spray of holy water, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of renewal and gratitude.  

When the countdown began, the energy was palpable. Everyone joined in, counting down in unison as fireworks lit up the sky. The vibrant colors reflected off the surrounding trees, creating a scene straight out of a dream. Cheers erupted, hugs were exchanged, and just like that, we were ready to embrace the New Year.  

The Day After  

Waking up on New Year’s Day at Shrida Ubud was an experience in itself. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, and the sounds of nature greeted us as we stepped onto our balcony. After a hearty breakfast featuring both Balinese and Western options, we decided to explore the property further.

We even joined a yoga session that morning, led by an instructor who guided us through a series of poses and breathing exercises. It was the perfect way to start the year feeling centered and refreshed.
